The PROTECH® T-O-D Style Upper-Element Thermostat is the most popular upper thermostat used in residential electric water heaters. These water heaters often have a non-simultaneous design, which means that only 1 heating element is on at any given time. This type of thermostat is for use in 2-element water heaters. A thermostat controls the power to the heating elements. If the water in the water heater tank is below the desired temperature, the thermostat will turn on the heating element.
